Gangsta AI

I want to start by saying the obvious thing, because I think it's true and I don't want it buried under the caveats: this is a genuinely good instinct.
Anthropic announced it's committing 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund — money meant to go toward the public good, with AI's effect on jobs named as something the fund can work on. And the number can grow: another 2% for every 50% the company's valuation climbs above a baseline. Stack that with what the co-founders have personally pledged and what the company matches for employees, and you get to roughly 20% of the company earmarked for somebody other than the shareholders.
Twenty percent. Of a company this size. That's not a press release with a bow on it, that's real.
They also said none of those shares will go to lobbying or political donations. In 2026 that line is almost more surprising than the number.
The part I'd want someone to tell me
And here's where I'd just gently hand you the rest of the page, because the details are right there in the announcement and they matter.
The fund is a limited liability company wholly owned by Anthropic. Not an independent foundation with outside trustees — a subsidiary. And the whole thing still needs approval from Anthropic's stockholders. It hasn't happened yet. It's a proposal with a very good heart.
No dollar figure was attached. The mechanics — who decides what gets funded, on what timeline, with what accountability — are coming "in the coming months." The examples given were broad: large gifts to established nonprofits, or payments made directly to particular groups of people. That's a wide door. It could lead somewhere wonderful. It could also lead to a slow, quiet nothing, and we won't know which for a while.
“A promise and a transfer are different things. Both can be sincere. Only one of them has already happened.”
I don't say that to be cynical. I say it because the kindest thing you can do with a generous announcement is hold it to its own standard later, when the news cycle has moved on and nobody's watching. That's not suspicion. That's just paying attention on purpose.
The habit underneath all of this
There's a version of this story where you read one headline — "AI company gives away 5%" — and you walk away with a feeling instead of a fact. And there's a version where you read a second one and notice the words *wholly owned* and *still needs approval*, and you end up with something closer to the truth.
That's the whole skill, honestly. Not knowing everything. Just not stopping at the first voice.
It's the same reason I wouldn't take one model's word on anything that mattered to me. Gangsta AI puts a question to the most powerful models at once and lets an adjudicator weigh them against each other, so you can see where they agree, where they split, and why. When they all land in the same place, that's worth something. When they don't, you've just been handed the exact thing to go look at.
So — good on Anthropic. Really. I hope the stockholders vote yes and I hope the fund does something that outlives the announcement. And in the meantime, on this and on everything else, go get the second opinion before you settle on the first one. Be excellent to each other.
