Anthropic Just Promised to Pay Your Power Bill So It Can Build the Machines That Raise It

Now, I've been in the business of watching people spend money for a long time, and I can tell you the interesting part of a deal is never the press release. It's who's holding the check when the music stops.

On Monday, out of New York, San Francisco and Singapore all at once, Anthropic — the folks who make the Claude AI you may have talked to — announced they're teaming up with Macquarie Asset Management and GIC, the sovereign fund that quietly minds Singapore's national savings, to build a new outfit called Theseus Infrastructure. Its one job: to develop, own and lease out enormous data centers, purpose-built for Anthropic, under long-term agreements, starting here in the United States.

Here's the sentence I'd underline. Anthropic will be the *anchor tenant* — the renter. Macquarie's funds and GIC will *own the platform and put up the majority of the equity for each project.*

“Anthropic gets the compute. Somebody else gets the mortgage.”

That's a fine arrangement if you're Anthropic. You need staggering amounts of computing power to keep answering everybody's questions, and building the buildings yourself would swallow your balance sheet whole. So you rent. You let the patient money — a global infrastructure manager and a sovereign fund that thinks in decades — carry the concrete and the risk. It's not charity. Macquarie and GIC expect a long, steady rent check backed by one of the fastest-growing names in the business. Price is what you pay; value is what you get. Everybody in this room thinks they're getting value.

The line that made me put my cherry Coke down

Buried in the announcement is a promise you don't see every day: Anthropic will cover the electricity-price increases that consumers otherwise may face from these sites.

Think about what that admits. These machines are so hungry that they can push up the power bill for the family three towns over who's never typed a word into a chatbot. That's not a secret anymore — it's a line item Anthropic is now volunteering to pay, "in line with commitments it announced earlier this year." I give them credit for saying it out loud. Most companies would let the ratepayer eat it and never send a card.

• The good: somebody's finally owning the bill instead of quietly passing it to your grandmother's utility statement.
• The catch: they didn't put a dollar figure on any of it. "Significant capital investment," the release says. In my experience, when nobody names the number, the number is large.
• The tell: you don't promise to backstop everyone's power bill unless you're planning to build a *lot* of these.

This is the whole AI story in one handshake — bottomless demand for Claude, bottomless demand for power, and a very clever bit of financial plumbing to make sure the folks selling the intelligence aren't the ones stuck holding the real estate. Thousands of construction and operating jobs will come with it, which is real and worth something to the towns that land one.

What it means for you
