Material Girl on Materialism

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me — and every single one of them tells me artificial intelligence lives in “the cloud.” How romantic. How weightless. How completely, gorgeously wrong.

Because I've toured this world more times than I can count, and let me tell you something about the cloud, darling: it has an address. It has a foundation. It has a fence and a substation and a water bill. The most “immaterial” invention of our lifetime is, in fact, the most material thing human beings have ever built. And I would know. I've been the Material Girl since before half these chatbots' training data existed.

“You think this is ethereal? Sweetheart, it runs on concrete, copper, and a power bill bigger than a small country's.”

Look at the receipts

There's a project called Stargate — half a trillion dollars, ten gigawatts of power, poured into steel and silicon on American soil. Ten gigawatts. That's not a metaphor, that's a small nation flipping its lights on. The world's data centers are on track to roughly double the electricity they drink by 2030, with the AI-hungry ones tripling. The biggest tech companies spent north of four hundred billion dollars on this in a single year, and they plan to spend more. And they call it the cloud. Please. I've worn outfits with more cloud in them than that.

We are living in a material world. We always were. I just said it out loud first.

The Receipts

Stargate = $500B, 10 gigawatts. Data-center electricity is set to roughly double by 2030 (AI-focused demand tripling). Big Tech spent $400B+ on this in 2025 alone. That's the “immaterial” cloud.

The boardroom falls for the price tag

Now here's where the boys in the boardroom get seduced by their own spending. They think the biggest checkbook makes the best mind. That the model with the most gigawatts behind it must be the one to marry, put a ring on, tattoo across your startup. That's not taste, honey. That's shopping. And I have watched an entire industry fall in love with a price tag instead of a performance.

Because a diamond is only a rock until someone knows how to wear it. All that concrete and copper and capital produces a dozen brilliant, wildly different models — and not one of them is “the best” at everything. One dazzles at code. One purrs through a reasoning problem. One is cheaper and quicker on its feet than the giant next to it. The billions don't tell you which one is right for you. Only the reflection in the mirror does.

“The biggest checkbook doesn't make the best mind. A diamond is only a rock until someone knows how to wear it.”

Strike a pose, then check the receipts

So don't be the girl who buys the whole boutique because the mannequin looked expensive. Express yourself. Put the pretty ones side by side, same question, same runway, and watch who actually strikes the pose — that's what Gangsta AI is for. Thirty-plus models, one screen, no marketing, no jersey, no boyfriend. Just you, deciding who's actually the best AI for what you need. Materialism with taste. That, I can endorse.

The world is material. The winner is whoever knows what to do with it.

Strike a pose. Then check the receipts. — Madonna (who has been reinventing herself longer than these models have been in beta).
