A Three-Year-Old Startup Just Raised $1 Billion to Build Nuclear Reactors Like a Factory — to Feed the AI Machine

We are living in a material world, and the AI industry has finally admitted the most material thing of all: none of it runs on vibes. It runs on electricity — enormous, uninterrupted, always-on electricity — and there is not nearly enough of it.
So on August 3, a company that did not exist three years ago walked away with $1 billion in Series B funding, led by Sequoia Capital, at a $6 billion valuation. Its name is Valar Atomics, it is headquartered in Hawthorne, California, and its plan is gloriously unsubtle: build small nuclear reactors the way you'd build a car — on an assembly line, by the fleet.
Strike a pose — then strike criticality
Most nuclear projects are cathedrals: one-off, decade-long, multibillion-dollar monuments to delay. Valar wants the opposite. Its reactors are high-temperature, gas-cooled units that use helium as a coolant, designed to be manufactured products rather than construction megaprojects.
And this is not a slide deck. On June 18, 2026, Valar's Ward-250 reactor reached self-sustaining criticality — reportedly the first time a private company pulled that off outside a national lab. Then came the part that made Silicon Valley sit up: post-criticality, the reactor powered an Nvidia Blackwell system directly. A reactor. Feeding a GPU. That is the whole thesis in one image.

Why the smart money suddenly loves atoms
The round was not lonely. Alongside Sequoia — whose Shaun Maguire takes a board seat — came Point72, Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, Riot Ventures, Conviction, HOF Capital and a crowd of others, plus a $200 million credit facility with J.P. Morgan and Hercules Capital in the mix. That's roughly $1.2 billion of conviction.
Why now? Because the models keep getting hungrier. Claude Opus 5, GPT-5.6, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Grok 4.5, Fable 5 — every new frontier release is another draw on the grid, and training runs and inference at scale need power that solar and wind can't promise at 3 a.m. Valar's answer is a waterless 30-megawatt AI factory it's building with Nvidia, with a test site at Utah's San Rafael Energy Lab. Compute and reactor, designed as one object.
The reinvention nobody scripted
Here's the twist worth savoring. The AI race was supposed to be about who has the smartest model. It quietly became about who has the most electrons. The frontier labs are locked in a benchmark knife-fight — and the people who may decide the winner are the ones who can pour gigawatts. Nuclear, left for dead a generation ago, is having its Blond Ambition moment, dragged back onto center stage by chatbots.
A billion dollars says the next great AI company might not write a single line of code. It might just keep the lights on.
